3.      Teaching Plan
3.1  Curriculum
At the basic education level, the Department of Education (DepEd) sets overall educational standards and mandates standardized testsfor the K–12 basic education system, although private schools are generally free to determine their own curriculum in accordance with existing laws and Department regulations.
On the other hand, at the higher education level, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) supervises and regulates colleges and universities, while the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for technical and vocational institutions regulates and accredits technical and vocational education programs and institutions.
For the academic year 2017–2018, about 83% of K–12 students attended public schools and about 17% either attended private schools or were home-schooled.
By law, education is compulsory for thirteen years (kindergarten and grades 1–12). These are grouped into three levels: elementary school (kindergarten–grade 6), junior high school (grades 7–10), and senior high school (grades 11–12); they may also be grouped into four key stages: 1st key stage (kindergarten–grade 3), 2nd key stage (grades 4–6), 3rd key stage (grades 7–10) and 4th key stage (grades 11–12). Children enter kindergarten at age 5.

Teacher Activity
Students Activity
A.    Motivation
(before the class begin, the teacher has aranged the seats of the students into U-sshaped)

Good morning, students!

How are you ths morning?

Alright, I have pieces of paper. I will give you one piece for each. I want you to think of 3 words you would use to describe yourself. For example: smart, patient, active, caring, adventorous, quiet, outgoing, clumsy, etc. Write down the words on your paper without discussing. I will give you one minute to write it down. After that, I will play the music. When the music is playing, all of you will pass the piece of paper to your right side. When the music stop, you will get a piece of paper of your friend. I will choose some students to demonstrate the characteristic of the person using three words with them, while the rest of the students will guess what character is that. For example, I write “careless” on my paper, so I am a careless. I will describe the character of my self with: “I always forget to put off the light” or “I can’t focus on more than two things”. Then you will guess. Have you got it? Okay, start from now!

(the students write down the words; the activity is began)

Okay, great job grade 5!

Who among you knows what is the topic of today?

Excellent! Today’s topic is related with characterization. What is characterization, grade 5?

Very good!

Good morning, teacher Muthi!

We are good, teacher.

Yes, teacher!

(the students write down the words; the activity is began)

Characterization, teacher!

The process by which a writer reveals the personality of a character, teacher!
B.     Presentation
Alright, students. I have a video. Now please pay attention to this video.

(after showing the video)

Please pay attention to these paper boards, grade 5.

(the teacher shows the paper boards and explains to the students)

The content of the paper board:
A.    Two ways of conveying information about a character:
1.      Direct characterization
It tells the reader what the personality of the character.
Example: Shawn is extremely intelligent.
2.      Indirect characterization
It shows things that reveal the personality of the character.
Example: Shawn barely has to spend any time studying but he always gets the highest grade in the class.
B.     Types of indirect characterization
There are five ways an author can communicate information about a character using indirect characterization.
1.      Speech (What does the character say? How does she/he speaks?)
2.      Thoughts (What is revealed through his/her thoughts?)
3.      Effect on other characters (How do the other characters act in response to this character?)
4.      Actions (How does he/she behave? What does he/she do?)
5.      Looks (What does he/she look like?)

(after explaining)

Okay students, for indirect characterization, just remember S.T.E.A.L.S = speech; T = Thoughts; E = Effect on the other characters; A = Action, and; L = Look .
(the students watch the video)

(the students pay attention the the paper boards and the explanation)
C.    Discussion
Alright, now I will divide you into groups of two people for each group. Each group will have two-sided board which has two sides, one side is labelled “I” for indirect characterization and the other side is labelled “D” for direct characterization. I will read aloud some sentences. After reading one sentence, you and your partner have to decide whether it is indirect characterization or direct characterization by raising one side of your board as I count 1 until 3. Do not change the decision. We will discuss the answer together after finishing all the sentences.

(the teacher give the groups the two-sided boards and reads aloud the sentences)

The sentences:
1.      Harmonie was a know-it-all who always told Ron and Harry the correct way to use their wands.
2.      “Stop! You’re going to tak someone’s eye out”, exclaimed Harmonie. “It’s LeviOsa not LevioSA”.

2.      Indirect
3.      Indirect

How many ways to convey information about a character?

What are the types of indirect characterization?

Excellent!
The process by which a writer reveals the personality of a character, teacher.

Suggested answer:
1.      Suggested answer: loyal, considerate.
Example: Jason demonstrates that he is a very loyal by continuing to work for his friend even though he is earning less money he could earn elsewhere. He also show that he is considerate by not telling his friend this information that would hurt him.
2.      Suggested answer: honesty, integrity, courage
Example: mae tells her father the truuth instead of lying. This shows that she has integrity. She also told the truth when it was a hard thing to do, which shows that she has courage.
3.      Suggested answer: sloppy, messy, lazy
Example: Michael has a gross mess in his room and rather than cleaning it he plays video games. This shows that he is messy, sloppy, and lazy.
4.      Suggested answer: helpful, neighborly, kind
Example: Andy demonstrates that he is a good neighbor by helping his neighbor without being asked. Andy saw him struggling with something, and he volunteered his help immediately. That was kind, helpful, and neighborly.’
5.      Suggested answer: Lazy, procrastinator, social , unmotivated.
Example: Kathy prefers to chat  on the internet instead of workingon her project. Maybe this is because she is lazy., but it is definitely shows that she procrastinates. The fact that she was happy with her C- gradeshows that she is unmotivated. F she were dissapointed by this grade, she might try harder in the future. Since she spends so much time chatting on the internet. This shows that she is a very social person.
